Past Judge Leslie A. Miller
Leslie Anne Miller has been a positive force for change in the legal profession throughout her career. Currently serving on the Cabinet of Governor Rendell as General Counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Ms. Miller has had a multi-faceted career as a civil litigator and mediator that has spanned a quarter of a century. A Judge Pro Tempore in the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County, Ms. Miller is a certified mediator in the Eastern District and Middle District Courts of Pennsylvania. In all of her endeavors, she is known as an innovative professional who advocates programs that advance women and foster diversity in both the legal profession and the business community.
Ms. Miller served as the first female president of the 27,000-member Pennsylvania Bar Association. Her involvement with the Pennsylvania Bar Association is ongoing and includes past positions as chair of the House of Delegates, Commission on Women in the Profession, and Young Lawyers Division.
Recently recognized for her professional accomplishments with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Thomas Jefferson University College of Health Professions, Ms. Miller also received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Wilson College in 2001. She has been a faculty member for numerous continuing legal education programs throughout Pennsylvania, including the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, the Philadelphia Bar Association, Temple Law School's Academy of Advocacy and Dickinson Law School's Trial Advocacy Seminar.
Respected for her dedication and accomplishment in developing the Kimmel Regional Performing Arts Center, Ms. Miller is currently co-chair of the Center's board of directors. Ms. Miller also serves as a board member of numerous leading cultural and not-for-profit organizations, including The Free Library of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Legal Services Corporation and WHYY. Throughout her long-standing involvement in corporate governance, Ms. Miller has been labeled a committed, responsible and thoughtful board member who has a unique understanding of the fiduciary and ethical responsibilities that come with these weighty positions.
Ms. Miller has received numerous honors throughout her career, recently being named one of five area "Women Making History" by the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and awarded a "Woman of Distinction" honor by the Philadelphia Business Journal. Ms. Miller was presented with the Alumnae Medal of Honor from her alma mater, Mount Holyoke College. Other honors include the President's Award from the Medical College of Pennsylvania; the Pennsylvania Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession's Ann X. Alpern Award; the Philadelphia Bar Association's Sandra Day O'Connor Award; and recognition as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania by Governor Thomas Ridge.
Ms. Miller earned her undergraduate degrees (A.B., cum laude, '73) from Mount Holyoke College, law degree (J.D., '77) from the Dickinson School of Law, and master's in law (L.LM. with honors, '94) from Temple University's Beasley School of Law. A resident of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Ms. Miller is a member of the board of trustees of both Mount Holyoke and Dickinson School of Law.
