(deceased) and Eleanor Maher Burns (deceased); graduated, LaSalle College (A.B.), 1954; Princeton University (M.A.), 1969; U.S. Army, 1954-88; director, U.S. Arms Control & Disarmament Agency, 1988-89; special envoy to Russia, Nuclear Dismantlement, 1992-93; member, Association of the U.S. Army; Council on Foreign Relations; Committee on International Security and Arms Control, National Academy of Sciences; board trustee, LaSalle University; president emeritus, board of trustees, U.S. Army War College Foundation; Doctor of Laws, h.c., LaSalle University; distinguished fellow, U.S. Army War College; appointed judge, Court of Judicial Discipline, August 1993; married Margaret Cassady; 4 sons: Ambassador William J., John R., Esq., Robert P., Lt. Col. Mark E. (USAF).
